Tulips have been in cultivation since the 13th century, but they became a collector’s passion among aristocrats in the 1600s when Turkish traders introduced them to the Dutch. The 17th-century tulip craze reached such heights that bulbs were traded as currency, and theft of flowers carried harsh penalties. While not the fanciest flower in the garden, the simple beauty and grace of tulips symbolize enduring love between partners, undying passion, royalty, abundance, prosperity, and indulgence. Though Victorians considered tulips a symbol of charity, the Turks who originally bred them saw them as a symbol of paradise on earth, inspiring numerous religious and secular poems and artworks. The Ottoman Empire planted bulbs to remind them of heaven and eternal life, while the Dutch who popularized the flower regarded it as a reminder of life’s brevity. Mixed with simple wildflowers and scattered in all directions, Flora & Fauna is considered a symbol of happiness and joie de vivre. The pattern also pays homage to artist Vittorio Accornero, whose Giardini di Seta works for Gucci inspired a generation of interior and fashion designers to create floral art.
